Before starting with Innate I had debilitating back issues from poor posture and working on my feet all day. Now I’m pretty much pain-free and it’s because I’ve developed the right muscles, strengthened my core and improved my posture. I feel great physically and mentally. I’ve dropped weight and have more muscle definition than ever before.

Recently I’ve been really stoked that I’ve been able to get a couple strict pull-ups, as I couldn’t do them when I started over a year ago. Also proud of the increase in weight I’ve been able to do recently all around, I can dow deadlift over #265 without any back pain.

Innate is awesome because of the coaches and members. It has a good friendly vibe.  I’ve learned in an incredible amount about myself in the last year both physically and mentally. I’ve become much more aware of how important diet is and eat completely differently than I did a year ago. The positive support from the staff and members makes all the difference in the world, especially when you’re pretty sure you can’t get one more rep in. Innate rules.

I’ve seen so many positive changes in my time at Innate, but one thing that underlies a lot of them is the improved health of my lower back. I’ve struggled with lower back weakness/injury for most of my life, and when I started here I was avoiding pretty-much anything that involved leaving the floor: box jumps, running, jumping rope, burpees, etc. And even with both feet on the ground, I was still prone to lower back injury from heavy-ish lifts like squats and deadlifts. But with lots of guidance from the Innate coaches (especially personal training with Coach Andrew) I’ve been learning proper form, and I now do all those exercises without giving it a second thought. Knowing that I can run and jump and generally move my body without the fear of being hobbled the next day is priceless!

In 2015 I did the Whole Life Challenge with Innate and lost 10 pounds in 8 weeks. I’ve managed to keep the weight off since the Challenge ended (which feels like almost as big an accomplishment). The 2 biggest things that drove the weight loss were: 1) finally getting serious/strict about quitting bread, and 2) the public accountability of being on the Challenge vs. just trying to do it on my own.

When I moved to Santa Barbara and decided to try CrossFit, I checked out all the different options in town. I ended up joining Innate because I liked the focus on total lifestyle wellness and functional fitness – including proper lifting form, mobility, nutrition, chiropractic, etc. (I still remember Coach Amanda on the first day of On Ramp: “Your ego is not your amigo.” ;-)) Now, 1.5 years later, I know that I chose wisely for those same reasons, and also because the people at Innate – the coaches and the whole community – just plain rock!

Over the past few months I have seen monstrous changes in my body composition. I lost 20lbs in 2.5 months and I have gained a ton of muscle! I feel like I’m constantly noticing increased muscle tone, especially in my back and tummy; even on my ‘off’ days, I feel better and stronger than I ever have. I feel like I am in better shape than I was in high school.

There are so many to list! In the past 6 months, I have gone from barely being able to run 400m to running almost 3 miles consecutively. I *almost* have a strict pull-up, I have gotten consistent at double-unders, and I love that I can do movements like handstand push-ups! I think my proudest moment was when I finished Murph; for weeks I debated if I should go for half, and when I decided to do the whole workout I worried that I would finish close to 90 minutes if I even made it that far. I finished at 54:28 with some modified movements, and now I can’t wait to BEAT that time next year RX!

My biggest fear joining was that the box I found wouldn’t live up to the expectations I had from my sister’s box. Innate has been that and more. I have a ton of new friends, coaches that push me to be my best, and programming that I love. I have made so many gains in the past few months that I can’t begin to count all my accomplishments, and I have everyone at CrossFit Innate to thank for that. It really is true that we cheer the loudest for the person in last place!

Updated April 2017

My journey with Innate has been amazing. I originally started so I could learn the movements and then do them on my own at a different gym. After my first group class, my mind changed completely. The atmosphere is addicting; we truly do cheer the loudest for the person in last place! After only one month of CrossFit, I decided to sign-up for the CrossFit Open and it was another decision I will never regret. I used that time as an opportunity to set benchmarks and goals. My first (and biggest) goal was a bodyweight pull-up. With the help of the coaches, I not only got one but now I am up to 5! I started CrossFit running a 14-minute mile, which is now consistently under 10 minutes (even with hills!).

I decided to compete in the CrossFit Open again my second year. Movements I couldn’t dream of a year ago came easy, and I have no one to thank but the amazing coaches at Innate. At 30 years old, I am in better shape than I was in high school when I played sports year round and competed on dance teams. Every day I’m amazed at what my body can do, and I go in each week eager to work towards my next goal!
